Broken springs are the number one reason a door suddenly will not move. You often hear a bang from the garage, and the opener will hum without lifting anything. That is not an opener problem, even though it looks like one.

Next come cables, then worn rollers and hinges, then the opener itself. A door that grinds, jerks or hangs crooked is usually telling you a mechanical part is on its way out, and the smart move is to deal with it before it snaps and bends a track.

Springs & Cables

The parts doing the heavy lifting.

A typical double door weighs well over a hundred pounds. The springs carry almost all of it, so your opener does not have to.

When a spring lets go, the door becomes very heavy and the opener cannot move it. That is why a broken spring stops everything. Spring work also carries real danger, because the tension is stored in the metal, so it is not a DIY job.

Torsion springs

These sit on a bar above the door. We replace them as a matched pair when the second one has done the same number of cycles, and we can fit high-cycle springs if your door opens a lot.

Extension springs

Found on many older doors. They run along the sides of the tracks, and we replace them together with their safety cables so a failed spring cannot whip across the garage.

Cables

Cables work with the springs. A frayed or off-drum cable leaves the door hanging crooked, and that is when tracks get bent, so it is worth fixing early.
